The Toon-Box "The Japan Trip 2004" series

I'm posting a series of photos I took while visiting Japan around this time last year. I've been meaning to post pictures of my various trips, and while that has been done before, I felt compelled to try it under the comic framework this time. I hope you enjoy it.

Ten steps of a successful Sci-Fi TV show

1 ) Create a sci-fi TV show. Somehow, it piques interest of geeks.
2 ) Cancel it for any reason somewhere along the way.
3 ) Watch rabid fans howling at you to bring the show back.
4 ) Create a grand-scale movie sequel to the original series.
5 ) Watch it become a box office success.
6 ) Eventually create a new follow-up TV series.
7 ) Create a movie sequel which is basically an expanded TV episode.
8 ) Repeat steps 6) and 7).
9 ) You may cram in an animated version of the series somewhere. Fans will not consider it 'canon'.
10) Eventually you run out of any creative ideas, the show hits a plateau, and it is cancelled. No one cares anymore.

This is basically how the famous Star Trek franchise basically went through in its 40-year history.

Right now, there's a sci-fi series that was aired and cancelled by Fox called 'Firefly', which has been recommended to me for watching. Apparently the show's been cancelled only after a few months of running, but is supposedly quite good. I'll be planning to watch it soon, but incidentally there's also a movie sequel called 'Serenity' coming up. I wonder if it'll go beyond step 4? We'll see.

Wesley 'might' appear on TV again...

EBS will be airing "Special Documentary - Silent War with EM Waves" at 6:20PM on 28th and our lab had been covered and interviewed by the EBS crew last week. And I'm pretty sure I got a few seconds of exposure on camera, but I'm not sure if survived the editing room. So if you're bored with the typical entertainment shows in the Sunday evening, have a look at this program.

Google Talk!

Well, I guess it was inevitable. Google now has its own instant messaging client. 'Google Talk' has just been released, and well, it's very clean and simple. Currently there's only Windows client available, but it's interoperable with iChat, so I can talk with my friends in Mac, too. KPUG members had lots of enthusiasm towards the new Google gadget, and I got around 30 buddies registered in 3 hours. Whoa.

Since this uses the Gmail address, Google Talk has the upside of doubling as Gmail notifier. Well, I'm already sold on this product. There are serious functional shortcomings (no group chat, no file transfer, slight typing incompatiblities for Korean language, etc.) but since this is a preview version and I've already filed bug reports, I expect it to improve considerably as it hits official release.

New s9y plug-in: Comics

You'll notice that there's a webcomic on top of the website. This is implemented by the new plug-in I made, named "Comics." It shows the latest comic on top of the front page, and adds a navigation link on the bottom of the comic so you can go to the first / previous / next / latest comic available.

The functionalities are simple at the moment, but I think it gets the job done, so I decided to officially release it on SourceForge CVS. Refer to the README file for details. As always, SF CVS web view has a few hours of delay, so come back later if it's not showing up yet.

Oh, and the comic. It's called "The Toon-Box" as a parody of the website name. I have thousands of images from my digital camera archive and I decided that this may be the best way to present it. Hope you like it. I plan to have it as a daily feature.
