Moon-Mars-Venus conjunction of 2017

Moon, Mars, and Venus line up in the western sky

As I dropped by Gwangju to catch a movie (I'll be posting a comic tomorrow), the western sky was adorned with an alignment of some of the bright bodies of the solar system as seen from the Earth - the Moon, Mars, and Venus. The occurrence was relatively well-publicized, but I forgot to carry a dedicated camera tonight. Luckily, the telephoto lens of the iPhone 7 Plus pulled through and I was able to capture this sight over the neighbourhood just before Venus dropped behind the buildings.

Triple planet observation

Saturn, Venus, and Jupiter in a single sighting

On the Memorial Day in Korea earlier this month, the night sky was clear and had three planets shining brightly in the sky at the same time. I took my astrophotography equipment outside and got some burst mode photos of the planets.

It seemed that Venus was quite bright and the default camera app didn't have enough adjustments available to make it dark enough to reveal any details on the half-disc. Also, Jupiter now being in the lower altitude hampered the details somewhat. Other than that, things turned out fine. It was nice to have a direct comparison of the apparent sizes between the planets.

Moon and Venus, together

Venus shines on top of the crescent Moon at Bitgaram City

When Venus is visible in the evening sky, a crescent Moon can be found nearby roughly once a month in the west. The clouds and fogs cleared up yesterday evening, and I was able to see the two objects above the unfinished skyline of Naju Bitgaram City. A yellowish layer of smog is seen lingering on the horizon in the photo, but this was gone by the morning.

Phases of Venus

More than 4 months of observing Venus

Here is all my recent observations of Venus through Canon SX50 HS in one picture. I think it shows pretty well how Venus dramatically approaches Earth while being in the inner orbit. The last six observations have been posted in the blog before:

[2013-10-30] [2013-11-17] [2013-11-30]
[2013-12-07] [2013-12-21] [2014-01-04]

The first two didn't look much on their own, so I didn't make an entry about them when they were photographed, but they make for a nice comparison, so I included them here now.
